What is a vaccine?

A vaccine is a substance that “teaches” our immune system to recognise and defend itself against viruses or bacteria that cause disease. Our immune system recognises the vaccine agents as foreign and recalls them in such a way that is capable of developing a rapid protective immune response when the body is infected by the pathogen. In other words, when the microorganism infects us, the immune system is already prepared to respond.
